Footprints CD Users Forum

I recently lost my Hard Drive and ended up having to purchase a new computer. During the past year I have promised to send a CD of Footprints to a number of our readers in exchange for their data. The repair shop was able to save only a portion of my e-mail but have not been able to find the names and addresses of all that were due a CD. If you have not received your CD, please let me know. Also send me your mailing address.

The database will be placed on the CD in the following formats:

  • Family Origins with photos. (ZIPPED exe file)
  • Roots Magic with photos. (ZIPPED exe file)
  • GEDCOM (no photos) (ZIPPED exe file)

As before we will try to add a few extra items to fill the CD.

Installing the CD

Each photo must be installed listing a drive number. Since most people have a c:\ drive, the photo's were installed using that drive. For this reason the photos must be placed in a folder on your C:\ drive in a directory as follows:

    c:\genealogy\photo#

I have my Family Origins (FOWIN) and Roots Magic (RM) also installed in separate folders (Directories) on the C:\ Drive as follows:

    c:\genealogy\ |- FOWIN (Family Origins program) | |-footprints (database) | |-myfile (database) |- Photo# |- Private# |- RM (Roots Magic program) |-footprints (database) |-myfile (database)

This allows both of my programs to utilize the same photos. Notice that my databases are in directories below the programs. Although my databases are stored for use in the C:\ drive, I keep daily backups on a different Hard Drive (actually a ZIP 100 drive).

Using Windows Explorer, from the CD, copy the directory "Genealogy", to your C:\ drive. This should copy all the files to your hard drive. Then click on each folder in the c:\ drive and they should open automatically.

Notice that there is a folder (directory) called "Private#". That directory will be empty. That is for storage of personal private documents (.jpg, .pdf, etc) that I keep stored in my database. These are such things as family Marriage license, Birth certificates, etc.
