JOHN ROOTE was b. 26 Feb 1608 at Badby, Northamptonshire, England. He died Aug
1684, age 76 at Farmington, CT, leaving an estate of 819 Lbs. "He was adopted by his fathers
brother who insisted John join Cromwell's Army. This will be explained
further in the unpublished manuscript of Edward N Root (1855-1921). John was a peaceable man and joined a company of Puritans bound for America. He was
one of the first settlers at Farmington, CT, in 1640 and married about that time to Mary
Kilbourne, b. 1619 or 1621, died 1697 at age 78. She was daughter of Thomas and Frances
Kilbourne of Glastonbury, CT. John and Mary were members of Farminton Church. John Roote's first three sons went to Westfield, MA. His son John, born about 1642, an
original grantee at Westfield, July 1666, removed there soon; first Clerk of the new town in
1669; freeman 27 Sep same year, was commissary during the Indian War as the General Court
allowed him funds for services; was one of the foundation men at the established church 1679;
Selectman 1686; lived on Main St and died 24 Sep 1687, aged 44. He (son John) married at
Springfield, 18 Oct 1664, Mary, daughter of Robert Ashley, born there 6 Feb 1644, joined
Westfield Church 16 Sep 1680.
