The Root name is believed to be of Teutonic origin, derived
from the German Rot meaning red or ruddy and the old Saxon word rod
defined as gay or cheerful. In ancient English and early American
records, Root has been spelled Rote, Roote, Rootes, and Roots. The
growing interest of Americans in genealogy and family history creates
respect for, and pride in, the family name. Regarded as an emblem of
family rather than nationality, the use of he coat of arms in many families
continued after the Revolutionary War. The coat of arms bearing the Root
name contains three red lozenges on a gold shield and a tree proper for
the crest. The wreath is of red and gold twists. The motto
Reviresco means I flourish again. -

We now have:
Since the book "A Branch of the Root Family" covers John and much
has been written of him, our primary coverage will be of Thomas Root.... John
will still be covered, but since there is a major publication on the family,
we do not expect much information to be added. We will continue with both
Research Centers for the benefit of our readers.
Additional Bibliography:
Footprints would like to thank Donald York and Virgina Belt for providing
many pages of information on the Root family. With this information we have
been able to establish the two major lines of the Root family descending
from Thomas Root.
The above was from the book "A Branch of the Root Family"
by Hazel Esther Drake, March 1948 and Alice Drake Grow, Mar 1979.

Ann was the daughter of William Francis Russell, born about 1550 in
Ipswich, Essex Co, England, and Ann Forester, born abt 1560 and died in 1630.
(There is some speculation that Ann Forester was also the third wife of Thomas Root.)

There is some speculation that John is not the son of John Root and Ann Russell,
but instead the son of a brother of John. This will be explained in the history of
this John Root.
