George Dryden Neill Cheves
and
Sarah Tennessee Rowland

George Dryden Neill Cheves, son of Calvin and Nancy Mary (Neill) Cheves of North Carolina, was born 22 Jan 1852, Corinth, Mississippi, Alcorn County. He married Sarah Tennessee Rowland [a cousin], 11 Nov 1870. Sarah an only child of George M and Nancy Cheves Rowland, was born 11 Dec 1852. Her parents died when she was very young. Sarah always said she was an orphan, French and raised by Uncle Jim [James Cheves].

George and Sarah came to Wise County, Texas about 1877 from Booneville, Mississippi, Prentiss County with their [first] three children. Their children were:

    Oscar Franklin Cheves, born Oct 3, 1871, Booneville, Mississippi, married Mary Frances Thresher, June 16, 1895. Four of their children are buried in the Willow Point, Wise County Cemetery, near Oscar and Molly.

    Luther Neill Cheves, born April 15, 1874, Booneville, Mississippi, was attending school at Graham, Texas to become a teacher, when he suddenly became ill and died Nov 23, 1894 at the age of Twenty. He was buried at Willow Point, Wise Co, Texas.

    Laura Cate Cheves, born Sept 21, 1876, Booneville, Mississippi, married John Marion Bloodworth Dec 18, 1890. Four of their six children were born in Willow Point, Texas. Although they moved to Olney, TX in 1897, some of their children attended the Decatur, TX, Baptist College.

    Thomas Edward Cheves, born March 27, 1879, was their first child born in Texas.

    Mittie Florence Cheves was born Feb 13, 1882 also in Jack County. Both died young and are buried in the Oxford Water Cemetery which is along the Jacksboro-Fort Worth Highway.

    Eva Ann Cheves, born Mar 6, 1884, Joplin, TX, married Wilburn Lang Miller, July 22, 1900. All of their five children were born in Willow Point, TX. One child, Doyal, died May 7, 1904 when he was six months old and is buried at or near Decatur, TX, but his grave has not been located. The Millers left Willow Point after 1914 for Olney, Texas.

    Hattie Cheves, born Sep 2, 1886, Willow Point, married John Sylvester Gregg, Dec 19, 1902. Their first born, Alma Esther died July 21, 1904 when she was three months old. She was buried in the Willow Point Cemetery. When their second baby was two months old, John and Hattie moved to Olney, Texas. They had eight girls which included two sets of twins. John died Sep 29, 1925 and is buried at Loving, TX. Hattie remarried Aug 16, 1939, to Joseph Newton Banks of Cottondale. They are both buried at Olney, TX.

    Melvin Otis Cheves, born Feb 12, 1889, married Bessie Irene Gregg, Dec 8, 1907 who was also from Willow Point. Their three boys were born at Willow Point. The third son, Adolphus Neil, died Dec 2, 1914. He was buried near Ethel Bloodworth and Alma Ester Gregg. The family later moved to Iowa Park, Wichita Co, Texas.

    Clyde Wendell Cheves was born Jan 1, 1894, Willow Point, TX. He married Eleanor Burnett Crawford, Dec 18, 1912. They had a family of four, living in the Olney and Archer City area.

Most of the Cheves children were married in Wise County, TX. They attended the Willow Point school and the Baptist Church. Their father owned and operated the general merchant store in Willow Point. He was a member of the I.O.O.F.

There are many Cheves' graves in Wise County, descendants of Calvin Cheves and his brother Moses Cheves. George died May 3, 1915 Willow Point, and Sarah died Mar 8, 1924 at Olney, TX, at her daughter's Eva Miller. Both George and Sarah are buried at Willow Point.
