Cheves Query 99-1 Looking for info on George Riley Cheeves born in Bedford Co, Tenn.
abt 1862, died in Pulaski, Giles Co, Tenn. 1933. He was married twice.
First Wife - Suzie Perryman - Children: Lillie, Claud, Willie Have conflicting info as to George's parent's. Death Certificate
states his parent's were Jessee and Sallie. Bible record of daughter, Georgia,
states it was Jake and Molly [Hargrove]. Any help please. Sandy Brown. Footprints Note: John Cheves, b. 3 Aug 1732, Bristol Parish, VA. The census records (which I will post later) indicates that James
had 6 sons. Of them, we know nothing about two. One born about 1806 and
another born about 1820. Either one of these sons (if they lived) would
have been the right age to be the father (or even the grandfather). Also according to census records, James Cheves (son of James)
had seven sons. Robert, Jacob, James and William. Three are "unknown" to us.
All are the right age to be the father, but we have no information on them. Other sons of James were checked. A number of them had sons that
were listed in the census records, but we found no information on them and we
list them as "Unknown". As soon as we get the census records posted, you will understand what we
have and have not found and you will be able to see the "Unknow" descendants
of James on the Thomas Cheves descendants lists. I hope this helps in attempting to research the family. It is possible
that someone else will have the answer for you. Cheves Query 99-2 My line is: Thomas' daughter Elizabeth is listed as having been b. NC, c1800 on the 1860 GA
census. I noticed that you have a Thomas, John and James in your CHEVES line. These names are repeated in my line. I have information from another researcher (snail mail - will need to look for her name and address). She is descended from Grief CHEVES who was withness for Last Will and Test for my Thomas CHEVES. There was also a John CHEVES as witness. She is of the opinion that Grief was an illegitimate son of a daughter of Governor CHEVES of South Carolina. She said there was an unnamed 10 yr. old that fit Grief's age in the Governor's household. She also said Grief was a Scottish name that meant something like "keeper of the manor." What ties have you made to NC or SC Cheves? I'd be happy to send any other info that might help to uncover our CHEVES roots. Peggy Hall Footprints Note: I have been told that almost all of the Cheves/Cheeves families in TN, GA and MS can be traced back to the Cheves of NC and VA. My Cheves line begins in VA, moved to NC and then one branch (James) moved to TN. (It is possible that he didn't actually move, as the borders were changed). We will be soon posting Census records, Deeds, and possibly Wills from that time period and it is possible that we may be able to clear up some of the "lost souls". I am very interested in your information and anything that can help make the connections. Also any articles you may have can be included on the Web Page as well as in our Newsletter which has a circulation to the non computer world. ![]() From: Peggy Hall E-Mail: cajun@primenet.com Found the following two queries.
The following query was on the Lancaster Co., SC page at:
http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/SC/Lancaster ACCIDENT IN 1823/LANCASTER, KILLED JOHN & MARINA AND INJURED
JAMES WHO DIED SEVERAL MONTHS LATER.
Does anyone have any info on this?
2. The second query found was on the followig page: "MY FAMILY NAME STARTS IN 1393 WITH JOHN SCHEVES
IN THE PARISH OF TARVES ABERDEENSHIRE. CAN ANYONE EXTEND ON THIS...
There has been some speculation that John Cheves, b. c1719 in
Scotland, and ancestor of SC Governor Langdon CHEVES were brothers to Thomas
CHEVES, b. c1710 who is an ancestor to many CHEVES families in NC, SC, GA
and elsewhere.
Does anyone have further info on this?
