Letters From
Loda and Zena Huddleston

Written to Verbie Harvey Fuller
13 Dec 1959
From Loda Huddleston, Taiban, New Mexico.

Dear Verbie

As Zena is writting the news I'll see if i can write a little genealogy or framily tree. you're paternal and my paternal are the same. There is a great number of our relatives that i have never seen but perhaps have heard them talked about more than you have. Grandma was a Copeland and Great Grandmother Copeland was a Basket. Grandma had three sisters and 1 brother. Emaline who died young, Aunt Caroline McClain, Aunt Adline Adams. She visited her brother in Indiana on her way to Texas. Never saw or heard from him any more.

The Harveys, Meads, Higgins, McClains and i don't know who else came by wagon train from Ill to Texas. Great Grandfather Copeland was Dutch. He married two sisters. After Grandmother Copeland died he married her widowed sister, who had a daughter Eliszabeth. She was Grandma's cousin, a McClain. She had three sons, I think were John, Wesley and Logue. They are our second cousins one degree removed; second and first cousins to Adline and Uncle Will (McClain). None of us ever saw them except Zena and she was very small. Years ago when Walter was traveling in Texas he met and talked to Logue a few minutes, but thought that he was just and old acquaintence of our parents.

Our half uncle John Harvey married grandmas first husbands sister. Their children are our half cousins. Then he married Iva, your Fathers first cousin. Their children are our half and second cousins witch equals first cousins.

Grandpa's mother was an Adams. He got his Cherokee blood from Hilderbrand name. His Grandmother was a full blood, his mother half, he one quarter, yourfather one-eighth, and you are one-sixteenth. The Cherokees don't belong to the red or the indian race. They are caucasions. The only civilized tribe in America when the colinist came. He had a brother Pleas, died before my birth. A half brother and sister, Jake and Jane.

He had a cousin "Uncle Tom Harvey" lived at Heart, Oklahoma when we were there. Had a big store there and a chain of stores also had lots of cattle. I remember one of his herds came by our place. "Uncle Jake Adams" was Grandpas cousin. I don't know if first or second. Also his brother in-law after he married Great Aunt Adline. His first children are some kind of cousins to us and his Aunt Adline's children are your father's first cousins, ourcousins one degree removed. Ourhalf Aunt Martha Higgens is Sister to Uncle John.

Aunt Adline Adams had two daughters by first husband. Bell and Ida Scott. I guess you know Aunt Martha and Uncle John are step brother and sister to Uncle Will and Aunt Adile McClain. Grandpa and Grandma were widowed each had two children by former marriage. My penmanship might have been better with ink and not by artificial light but i just don't use ink unles nesasary. Zena might tell some more. I'll quit. Love to all.

Loda

Important items in Zena's letter are the names that we are related to: Meads, Adams, McClains, and McDaniels (Mentioned in another letter). How we are related, she was not sure.

Transcribed by:
Verbie Harvey Fuller and Susan Margeret Fuller Buck - 1 Oct 1981.

Editors Note: The letter is shown exactly as written. One other item that could be important. The Harveys were on the Wagon Train, which means that there is a possibility that Thomas Harvey had gone to Illinois. See notes in "Thomas Harvey's West" and "Indian Times". Also see notes by Max Reed.

The following letter was written to Verbie (Harvey) Fuller

From
Zena Huddleston,
Taiban, New Mexico
11 December 1959

Dear Verbie,

We are late getting around to answering you, but guess its better late then never. Yes, Dear, we've read two letters from you and they were surely apreciaded and the pictures you sent some time ago. We are still looking at them. We haven't had any severe cold weather her yet, but we had the hottest summer we've had since we've been here and we've been here over 50 years. The hot weather didn't seem to agree with any of us, and Walter taken bad sick in last June we taken him to hospital at Fort Summer. He had kidney stones. The Dr. at Fort Summer advised him to go to the specialist at Medical Center at Roswell. They got two large stones out through the bladder without making an insision. He seem alright since was in the hospital over two weeks. Was glad to get back home. Walter is the only one of we four that has been sick enough to have to be in the hospital, has been in three times since our father passed away. Went to Alberque for an operation and to a Clovis hospital with a broken leg. That was about ten or twelve years back so has both legs broken. First was broken years ago was about eighteen years old.

Aunt Betti and two of her daughters, Nona Priddie and baby girl and husband, Dura and Gettes McCool from Nocona paid us a short visit in Aug. We had a letter from them after they got home. The Nocona folks were OK at that time.

We had a letter from Bessie (McClain) Givens and think you know her address is Mrs WC Givens 603, Armore Okla. Has lived there thirty some odd years. I surely do like the state of Okla. Think it is the most beautiful of all the states in the Union. Poor Bessie had two brothers pass away in the last year, Roy and Charlie. Guess maybe you heard.

Does Dollie live at Medical Washington yet? Last letter we had from her was in 1954. We didn't get any answer from her. Though maby she never received it. I think Dollie favors our grand mother Harvey more than any of you children. Bettie thinks Loda and me favor Grandma a lot. I think Grandma was a very pretty woman. Grandpa used to worry her by saying she was to fat to be pretty and he thought his first wife Dinah was the prettiest woman in the world. That made me so jealous. He finally noticed my condition and braged on Grandma being so industrious and smart and good that I finally straightened out on that was a very small chap.

Verbie, we are sending you the genealogy. Don't know if you can get much out of it. You can ask questions. We are right in the middle of the McClains. Grandma's and Grandpa's relations are all mixed up on who our related to. Can tell you who of the Meads, Adams, McClains, McDaniels and many others are. How they are related to us and the ones that are not. The ground is covered with snow here but is melting. Hope you are still improving and soon well. Just don't give up getting sell. Love and Best regards and Merry Xmas to all.

Zena
