Not much is known of Nehemiah Morse Sr. at this time. From the
information received to date, we find that he was still living as late as 1847, but
not as late as 1850. In 1847 Nehemiah was still living as he and Olive were
taking care of Olive's father Isaac Underwood. The same legal matter mentioned
that Nehemiah Morse had loaned mony to Isaac. [We are not sure if it was the
father or son that loaned him the money.] Olive took care of her father for an
extended time and is named in the settlement of her father's estate, but no name for
her husband, which leads us to believe that he had died before the settlement was made
Olive's father was Issac Underwood, a Revolutionary War Vet and her mother is
believed to be Zilpha Castle. Olive was the fourth of eight children.
Of Olive's children, we have been able to find a few of them, but that information is
inconclusive. Between the Census Records of 1840 Lawrence, Stark Co, OH and the 1850
records of Westfield and of Chatham, (both are in Medina Co, OH) we have found that
there are still two sons and one daughter that we have no record of. See the
1840 Census records.
The 1840 census lists One son was born between 1810 and 1820. Two sons were
born between 1820 and 1825. A fourth son was born between 1825 & 1830. In
the 1850 census we find that one son is named Nehemiah and was born about 1823.
So we now account for one of the sons born between 1820 & 1825. Our search for
Nehemia until recently had turned up nothing as we had not been able to find any census
records on him anywhere. With the new information provided by our researchers, we
have been able to follow him and his family to Wisconsin and beyond.
We have found what we believe to be one of the older sons, and that is Isaac.
It is purely circumstantial evidence, but is very likely.
We do find some problems with his marriage and date of birth. The date of birth
differs on may Census Records so that can be accepted, and he listed with two different
wives, but it is possible that he was married twice. We have listed his census
records, but he is questionable. Go to Isaac below and you will see why this
Isaac is included with the family of Nehemiah and Olive (Underwood) Morse.
Asahel Morse nother name has been suggested that we should look into. A search
of that name has brought up some interesting information. It should be noted that
Nehemia II had at one time lived in Jo Daviess Co, IL. There we find Asahel Mores
living with a family. Some of the names used in his family is used in other Mores
families. That does not make the names part of our Mores family, but helps us
want to continue to researth the name. We will list him as one of the older sons,
but at this time there is no "official" connection.
Nothing is known on Amanda E., Annis or Mary D.
We are putting together a history of the Morse family of Madina County,
Ohio, as we have it recorded on the database at this time. We hope
to be able to provide census records, wills, individual histories, military records,
cemetery records and even photos. We will begin with the information that I
have available, but am in need of any information you may have on the family, their
descendants or ancestors.
If you would like, we will add your name to the list of researchers
of this family. We will also provide a link to, all other web sites researching
this name. If you have knowledge of any, please submit them for this list.
