The Shipman Family
of English Origins In America

©   Compiled By: Ken Shipman

[Family #1] Edward Shipman b. ca. 1625, d. 15 Sep 1697 came to Saybrook, CT ca. 1635 as child, it is thought, in the company of Theodore Fenwick, Hugh Peters and John Davenport. Another account has him the orphan child of a religious refugee sailing from Hull, England in ca. 1639, in the care of George Fenwick. His parents and place of birth have not been reliably determined although Hull and Nottingham have been suggested. Some accounts refer to him as Edward Shipton, however, the preponderance of evidence, such as the naming of his children and other official documents, confirms Shipman as his proper name.

Edward lived in the north part of Saybrook, CT, then called Pattaconke or Pattaquonk now Chester, and was part of it’s very early settlement. He became a freeman ca. 1667, a Townsman or Selectman and land owner by 1672 according to deeds, wills and town documents. His occupation was that of a Tailor but his land holdings would indicate he also farmed his land holdings.

Apparently Edward was a friend of the Mohican Chief Joshua Uncas who in his will of 29 Feb 1675 left him 3000 acres within sight of the now City of Hartford. He was also a veteran of the Naragansett war and was granted land by the government for his military service.

Edward married Elizabeth Comstock, 1 Jan 1651. She was born ca. 1631 in England the daughter of William Comstock and Elizabeth Daniels.   Elizabeth died at age 28, on the 15 Jul 1659.   They had the following children:

Edward then married [2nd] Mary Chandler Andrews on 1 Jul 1663. She was born ca. 1650/1651 in New Haven, CT and died 30 Aug 1704 at Saybrook. They had the Following children:

William apparently inherited, or was given much of the land his father Edward had received from Chief Joshua Uncas. Extracts of Colchester Records show him as deeding two separate parcels of 1000 acres of the land once owned by Edward. He was also the owner of various other parcels of land. His son Dr. Samuel Shipman was administrator of his estate.

William married Alice Hand on 25 Nov 1690. She was born 2 Jan 1670, in Wainscott, South Long Island, the daughter of Stephen Hand and Sarah Bancroft Stratton. Alice died after 1713 at Saybrook, New Haven, CT. They had the following children:

He is buried in Read Cemetery, Augusta Township, Leeds-Grenville Co, Ontario, Canada. Daniel was a United Empire Loyalist which describes those people who were against the American Revolution and sympathized with the British. They were referred to at that time as Tories.

In 1778 Daniel was living in Albany County, NY. A list of names, of Tories and Protection Men, in the papers of Governor Clinton dated 23 February, 1778 that the “Cambridge White Caps” went out to correct and chastise contains Daniel’s name.

A deposition to the British Authorities,containing Governor Clinton’s list, filed 7 Feb 1786, by Daniel seeking compensation for his losses namely his land and chattels reads as follows;

    “attempting to go into General Burgoyne’s camp in August 1777, was taken prisioner and carried to General Gates, from there to Albany. Lay prisioner abord the Guard ship fourteen days from thence to Toppice where I lay six days before that place burnt, then carried to a meeting house on the way to Hartford but obtained a parole to go to my family. After arriving was taken by thirty men in the Mob and Abused, Strypt me and whipt me Severly.

    The spring after was taken to be guarded to Albany but got released. After this came four men with their arms and a rope intending to kill me or hang me but I concealed myself under the floor. I then fled my house and quit my land and escaped to the State of Vermont”

The deposition then lists his losses but was rejected by the authorities. It appears he remained a resident of the United States until June 1784 before going to Canada.

Daniel and his children received numerous grants of land as loyalists and children of loyalists mainly in Elizabethtown and Augusta Townships, near Brockville, Leeds-Grenville Co, Ontario, Canada.
