    Services Monday afternoon
    for LeRoy Shipman

          Services for LeRoy Shipman, age 45, well known through-out Iowa through his business connections as owner and operator of the Hale Transfer and Storage company, will be Monday, Oct 10, at 2 p.m. in the Newman funeral chapel. Rev. Richard Goins of First Christian church will officiate with burial at Forest cemetery.

          Mr. Shipman, who suffered a fatal heart attack Thursday evening, was active in many organizations in Oskaloosa and was serving as vice president of the Sports, Inc. at the time of his death.

    LeRoy Shipman, 45,
    Oskaloosa business man,
    dies Thursday

          LeRoy Shipman, age 45, of 916 south Eleventh Street, owner and operator of the Hale Transfer & Storage company in Oskaloosa, died suddenly Thursday, Oct 6, at 6:48 p.m. in Mahaska hospital following a heart attach. Mr. Shipman had seemed in apparent good health, working each day, and suffered his first attack between four and five o’clock Thursday morning.

          LeRoy was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, No. 276; Masonic Council lodge, AF & AM; Vega chapter, No. 532, Order of the Eastern Star; Oskaloosa Chamber of Commerce, Junior Chamber of Commerce; Order of the Elks; Izaak Walton League and active in the Penn Booster club.

          He was the son of Roy and Fern Gibson Shipman and his father, a resident of Albia, survives.

          Others surviving are: the wife, Helen, convalescing at home following recent surgery; twin son and daughter, Larry and Loretta at home and the daughter, Louise. Mrs. Gene Phillips of Oskaloosa; two brothers, Jack Shipman of Oskaloosa and Harley Shipman of Centerville; a sister, Mrs Dave (Helen) Farnam of Detroit, Mich.; a half-brother, Glen Currier of Rose Hill, and five half-sisters.

          Services will be at the Newman funeral chapel Monday, Oct 10, at 2 p.m. with burial at Forest cemetery. Rev. Richard Goins of First Christian church will officiate.

    Shipman--- Mrs Margaret (Lee) Shipman, wife of Grant Shipman, 512 south H street, died at her home this morning following a sudden heart attack at 5 o’clock.   Mrs Shipman, aged 68 years, ten months, and six days, is survived by her husband, and seven children, Vernie, Roy, Fremont, and Sam Shipman, and Mrs Ralph Hale, all of Oskaloosa, Mrs Bertha Stewart of Rose Hill, and Dick Shipman of Newton.

    Funeral services will be held at the Powers Funeral home at 2 p.m. Wednesday, September 15.   Burial in Forest cemetery.


    Vernal Shipman

    Vernal Shipman--- Vernal Shipman of 419 North C street, veteran of World War I, died at the Veterans hospital in Des Moines on his 70th birthday, Wednesday, July 27. Surviving are: two sisters, Mrs Wayne (Bertha) Stewart and Mrs Ralph (Mary) Hale of Oskaloosa; one brother, Roy Shipman of Albia, rural route, and several nieces and nephews.

    Services will be Friday, July 29, at 2 p.m. (DST) at Powers funeral home.   Rev. Hugh Guy will officiate with burial at Forest cemetery.   Military escort will be by the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars.

    Forrest Shipman

    Forrest (Dick) Shipman , 50, of 405 Fifth Avenue east died suddenly Tuesday morning in St Paul, Minn., where he had gone as a driver for the Jones Distributing company of Oskaloosa.   He had reached his destination.   Mr. Shipman had lived in Oskaloosa for over 40 years.

    Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at the Powers funeral home with Rev. M. Dwight Walker of the First Christian church officiating.   Burial will be in Forest cemetery.   Tri Luminar Masonic Lodge members will also participate in the services.

    Surviving are the wife, Florence; a daughter, Mary Margaret; two brothers, Vernal Shipman of Oskaloosa and Roy Shipman of Albia; two sisters, Mrs Ralph Hale of Oskaloosa and Mrs Wayne Steward of Oskaloosa, and several nieces and nephews.

    Mary Emaline (Darling) Shipman
    11 Jan 1868 - 23 Mar 1930


    Mary Emaline , daughter of Mr and Mrs Henry W. Darling, was born near Millersburg, Ia., January 11, 1868, and departed this life Sunday morning, at 7:30 a.m., March 23, 1930, at age 62 years, 2 months and 12 days. Mrs Shipman attended the Millersburg school and grew to womanhood in that community. On July 9th, 1887, she was united in marriage to George Shipman at Thornburg, Iowa. To this union five children were born; Eva, Nellie, Madge and Lula, which preceded her in death, and one son, Cecil, who now resides in What Cheer.

    They established there home in Thornburg, Iowa, until the spring of 1896 they moved to What Cheer, Ia., which since has been their home. Mrs Shipman united with the Christian church when a very young woman. Her good deeds and kindness to others, has shown her good Christian faith.

    She was a kind and loving neighbor and highly respected by all who knew her. Mrs Shipman’s departure has left to mourn beside the husband and son, four grandchildren, Deloss, Margaret, Norman, Etna, and one granddaughter, Orel having preceded her in death, three sisters, Mrs Lulu Long, of Schaffer, North Dakota; Mrs Mae Vandyke, of Cedar Rapids, Ia.; Mrs Lillian Woods, of Keswick, Ia.; one brother, Henry Darling, of Ottumwa, Ia.; and a host of other relatives and friends.

    She was a Soldiers daughter and belonged to the G.A.R. Circle.

    The funeral was held at the Christian church Tuesday at 2:30 o’clock. Medames Whyle, Rose and Mr Vannest and Mr McClain rendered very beautiful songs. Rev. Lloyd Tennant of New Sharon, Conducted the funeral.

    Vivian Shipman

    Vivian G Shipman , 72. Of Oskaloosa, died Saturday, Dec 23, at Mahaska Hospital in Oskaloosa. The body has been cremated; a memorial service was held this morning, Dec 26, at Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa, Pastor Alvern Boetsma officiating. Burial of the remains will be at a later date in Forest Cemetery in Oskaloosa. Memorials: Mahaska Hospice.

    Vivian G Shipman was born Nov 9, 1928, in Brooklyn, to Homer and Martha Workman Newton. She attended school in Brooklyn and then Montezuma, and graduated from Montezuma High School in 1946. On Feb 12, 1949, she married Jack Shipman in Oskaloosa. She worked at Oskaloosa Home Loan and Savings in Oskaloosa, and at Mahaska State Bank. In 1970, she and her husband, Jack, developed a mobile home park and operated Shipman’s Mobile Home Court and Sales. She enjoyed crocheting Afghans, and fishing.

    She is survived by her husband, Jack, of Oskaloosa; a son and daughter-in-law, Richard Lee “Rick” and Nancy Shipman, Mindy Shipman, and Jaclyn Cassie Jones. She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Judith Ann “Judy” Shipman Jones; and a brother, Jim Newton.

    Funeral services were conducted from the Garfield Community Church, on Monday morning, March the 15th at 10:00 O’clock.

    Eva Shipman
    4 May 1902 - 29 April 1969

    Shipman-- Funeral services are pending at the Garland Chapel for Mrs Eva Shipman, 66, of 912 First avenue west, who died Tuesday evening at Tower Park Nursing Home. Born in Oskaloosa, May 4, 1902, the daughter of Edward and Elmeda Tarr Hale, she was a life long resident here. Survivors include three sisters, Mrs Velma Hawkins of Oskaloosa, Mrs Ruth Sloan of Newton and Mrs Elen Hargrave of Glenwood and Two brothers, Edward and Paul Hale, both of Oskaloosa.

    Shipman-- Funeral services for Mrs Eva Shipman, 66, of 912 First avenue west, who died Tuesday evening at Tower Park Nursing Home, will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday at the Garland Chapel. The Rev. Everett Hovey will officiate and burial will be in White Cemetery.

    Besides three sisters and two brothers, Mrs Shipman is survived by a granddaughter, Kathy Shipman Pollock of Lebanon, Ore.

    HALE--- Edward Hale, 88, of 905 Third avenue west died at his home about 5 p.m., Wednesday. Mr Hale was a retired teamster and had lived in Oskaloosa for about 75 years. He was born near Columbia. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Powers funeral home with Rev. Duane Moon of the College Avenue Friends church officiating.

    Burial will be in the old White Cemetery. Surviving are four daughters; Mrs Velma Hawkins, Mrs Eva Shipman of Oskaloosa, Mrs Ruth Sloane of Newton and Mrs Ellen Hargrave of Glenwood; two sons, Edward D and Paul of Oskaloosa; seven grandchildren; three great grandchildren; one brother, Charles of Newton and several nieces and nephews. 4-25-1956

    Friday, Jan 21, 1977 - Roy L Shipman --- Funeral services for Roy L Shipman, 85, Rt. 3, who died at the Mahaska County Hospital Thursday will be at Newman Funeral Chapel Saturday at 1:30 with Pastor Robert Bear, Sully, officiating.

    Burial will be in the White Cemetery in Oskaloosa Born Nov 9, 1891 in Keokuk County, he was the son of Grant and Margaret Lee Shipman. He was a retired coal miner.

    Surviving are his wife Opal, six daughters, Mrs Dave (Helen) Farnum; Cadillac, Mich.; Mrs Lyle (Doris) Showman, Rt 5, Oskaloosa, Mrs Harold (Margaret) Wells, Rt 1, Sully, Mrs Ed (Beulah) Cameron, Rt 5, Oskaloosa, Mrs Darlene Brumbaugh, What Cheer, Mrs Gene (Nellie) Winkleman, Beacon, two sons, Harley Shipman, Numa, Iowa and Jack Shipman, Rt 3, Oskaloosa, 27 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.

    Shipman--- Mrs Roy Shipman 38 years old, died at her home four miles south of Eddyville this for noon following an extended illness. The husband and four children, Leroy, Helen, Harley, and Jackie and the mother, Mrs Frank Gates of Oskaloosa and two sisters and a brother survive. Funeral arrangements later.

    Fern Shipman

    Mrs Roy Shipman Dies--- Mrs Roy Shipman died at her home south of town Monday morning after an illness of several weeks. She had been a patient at the hospital in Oskaloosa and had been brought home Saturday. She was thought to be improving nicely but suddenly became worse and died in a short time. She is survived by her husband and four children; Leroy, Helen, Harley and Jack, her mother, two sisters and a brother.

    Anna Gates
    1867 - 1944


    Gates ---- Mrs Anna Gates, died at 9:20 O’clock Sunday evening at 211 B Avenue west, at the age of 77 years. She leaves two daughters, Mrs Frank Chambers of Beardstown, Ill., and Mrs Blanch Lynch of Oskaloosa, and a son Ross Gibson of the U.S. Navy, who is home on leave from New Guinea, Funeral services at Power’s funeral home Wednesday at 2 O’clock, with Rev. Edgar L Knight in charge. Burial in White cemetery.

    Bernice Currier
    26 September 1923 - 27 April 1971


    Bernice Currier -- Mrs Bernice Currier, 47, Rose Hill Route 1, died Tuesday evening at Mahaska Hospital. Mrs Currier was the widow of Glen Currier, she was born in St Louis, Mo., Sep 26, 1923. She was the daughter of Mr and Mrs Abe Friede. Survivors include her mother, Mrs Edith Friede of Santa Monica, Calif., one sister, Mrs Barbara Rude of Los Angeles, Calif., one brother, Marvin Friede of Albuquerque, N.M.

    Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at the Garland Chapel. Burial will be at the Old Rose Hill Cemetery.

    Sam Shipman

    Sam Shipman Funeral. Iowa Valve company employees attended funeral services for Sam Shipman. Iowa Valve company employee who died suddenly at the plant during the lunch hour Wednesday noon. At the Wilcox Garland chapel Saturday afternoon. Rev. E.L. Knight was in charge of the services and special music was furnished by Miss Wilma Naaktgeboren, with Miss Jennie Fry, accompanist. Pall Bearers were Ralph Hite, Lee Murphy, George Carr, Harry Hummel, Richrd Baker and Ralph Hart Jr. Burial at Forest cemetery.

    James J Shipman
    31 October 1838 - 13 March 1926


    James J Shipman Laid at Rest Today

    James J Shipman was born in Springfield, Ohio, October 31, 1838 and died in Red Cloud, March 13, 1926, aged 87 years, 4 months and 12 days.

    As a boy Mr Shipman moved with his parents to Cleveland, Indiana, where he grew to manhood. He engaged in farming until he went to serve his country in the Civil War. He enlisted August 13, 1862 in Company B 99th regiment of Indiana Infantry; he was discharged at Madison, Indiana May 24, 1865, after nearly 3 years of service. He was with General Sherman on his famous march to the sea.

    After the war he engaged in the carpenter trade at Oskaloosa Iowa, later going on a farm. Here he was married to Miss Anna Parrish, July 3, 1870. To this union were born eight children, two girls, Clara and Ida; and six boys, Ernest, Arthur, Sherman, William, Worth and Harry. About 1902 he moved his family to western Kansas, where he homesteaded. Three years later he moved to Jewell county, Kansas, where he lived until coming to Red Cloud, about 1917.

    There remain to mourn his death, his wife, all of his children, Mrs Ida Shigley of Nebraska City; Ernest Arthur, William, Sherman of Red Cloud; Worth of Siebert, Colorado; Harry of St Paul, Minnesota; twenty one grandchildren; six great grandchildren; four brothers, Joseph W of Ringwood, Oklahoma, Charles of Marion, Ohio, George of Whatcheer Iowa, and Grant of Oskaloosa, Iowa, and many other relatives and friends.

    Mr. Shipman was a member of the G.A.R. at Burr Oak, Kansas. “Men die, but sorrow never dies; and the wide world is knit with ties, the crowding years divide in vain, of common brotherhood in pain.”

    Funeral services were conducted from the Garfield Community church this morning at 10 o’clock, Rev. C. G. Nelson of the Red Cloud Christian church.

    Robert Shipman– 1966 Services for Robert Shipment, 43, 905 Third Avenue west, who died while at work Monday, will be at 1:30 p.m., Friday at the Garland Chapel with Rev. Max Johnson in charge, and burial in Old White cemetery.

    Fremont Shipman
    18 January 1895 - 30 January 1951


    Fremont Shipman, 56, died suddenly Tuesday, Jan 30, at 8:00 a.m. at his home, 701 Sixth avenue east. He has not been in good health for some time but was up and about the house when he suffered a heart attack which resulted in his death.

    Funeral services will be held Thursday, at 2: p.m. at Powers. Burial in Forrest cemetery. Surviviing are the wife, Mary, and one son, Donald, who resides at Maxwell. Two sisters, Mrs Ralph Hale and Mrs Wayne Stewart both of Oskaloosa and three brothers, Vernal and Dick of Oskaloosa and Roy of Rose Hill. He was a veteran of World War I, a member of the American Legion, Knights of Pythias and Eagle’s lodges.

    Arthur Shipman
    1860 - 28 October 1900


    Arthur Shipman -- Died, at the home of his brother, Grant Shipman at Hildegard, Sunday morning, Oct 28, 1900, of consumption, Arthur Shipman, aged about 40 years. Deceased left here last spring and has been spending the summer in Kansas and Oklahoma in the hope of benefitting his health. He returned a few days ago, destitute and sick unto death to die among relatives. His wife died some two years ago and their five children are scattered in homes tendered them by friends. This is the sad ending of a life full of hardship.

    Michael Wayne Woods
    14 February 1956 - 20 May 2004


    Marlon ------ Michael Wayne Woods , 48 of Marlon, died Thursday, May 20, at St Luke’s Hospital. His memorial service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 25, at Jones-Eden Funeral Home in Washington, the Rev. Richard Boyd officiating. Burial will be in Forest Cemetery in Oskaloosa at a later date. The family will greet visitors 7-8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home. Military honors will be conducted Tuesday at the close of the memorial service. Memorials may be made to Boy Scouts of America.

    Florence Marie Shipman

    Florence Marie Shipman
    Fairfax – Florence Marie Shipman, 81, formerly of Oskaloosa, died Monday, May 4, 1992 at Living Center West in Cedar Rapids. She was born Sept. 21, 1910 in Oskaloosa to William H and Hilda Turek Risney.

    She married Forrest (Dick) Shipman on July 26, 1936 in Oskaloosa. He died on April 17, 1956. She was a 50 year member of O.E.S. No. 146 at the time of her death. She lived in Echo, Utah 1956-1973, then returned to Iowa and made her home with her daughter, Mary, In Fairfax

    She is survived by a daughter and her husband, Mary M and Eldon Hasley of Fairfax; three grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and a sister, Lorraine Swanson.

    Funeral services will be held Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at the Garland-Van Arkel- Langkamp Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa, with the Rev. Richard Boyd of the First Christian Church in Washington officiating. Cremation will follow the service. Visitation will begin after 9 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, with the family present 7-8 p.m. Wednesday evening. A memorial has been established in her name.


    Nicole Marie Morrissey

    Nicole Marie Morrissey

    Nicole Marie Morrissey -- 10 year old daughter of Julia and Mike Morrissey of the 4000 block of 33rd Street, died of cancer Sunday at Mercy Hospice-Johnston.

    Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at St John’s Lutheran Church. Cremation will follow services.

    Nicole had lived in Des Moines all her life. She was a fifth grade student at Woodlawn Elementary School and a member of St John’s Lutheran Church, Girl Scouts, Woodlawn Singers, the Talented and Gifted Program and her school’s Safety Patrol.

    She had played basketball with Des Moines Metro Rec Basketball and soccer with Des Moines Northwest Soccer. She enjoyed arts and crafts, fishing and playing the piano.

    In addition to her parents, she is survived by a brother, Bryan Morrissey at home, her grandparents, Loretta Estes of Des Moines and Ann and Jim Morrissey of Urbandale; and her great grandmother, Helen Palmer of Oskaloosa.

    Friends may call after 2 p.m. today at Westover Funeral Home, where the family will be present from 5 to 8 p.m. and where a prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Heart Connection or Children’s Oncology Group.

    Glen Currier

    Glen Currier -- is found dead today, age 58, of Rose Hill, salesman for Green’s Motors, Inc., Oskaloosa, died in his sleep Monday night at his home. He was found Tuesday morning by Paul Roby who had made previous plans with Currier to put another lead-in wire on the Curriers’ TV antenna.

    For many years Glen owned and operated Currier Motors here in Oskaloosa and since 1953 has served as a salesman at Green’s.

    Surviving are: the wife, Bernice Currier of Rose Hill; his father, Walter Currier of Oskaloosa and two step brothers, Jack Shipman of Oskaloosa and Don Currier of California.

    Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time.


    Glen Currier -- Glen Currier, age 53, of Rose Hill, died Monday night at his home, the same home in which he was born. He resided most of his life in this area.

    Surviving are: the wife, Bernice; the parents, Mr and Mrs Walter Currier of Oskaloosa; three brothers; Donald Currier of Compton, Calif., Jack Shipman of Oskaloosa and Harley Shipman of Centerville and a sister, Mrs Helen Farnam of Detroit, Mich.

    Services will be at the Garland chapel Thursday, May 16, at 2 p.m. with burial at Old Hill cemetery. Rev. Richard Goins of First Christian church will officiate.

    Helen Farnam
    30 July 1918 - 26 April 2004


    Helen Farnam of Cadillac passed away Monday, April 26, 2004, at Lakeview Lutheran Manor. She was 85. She was born July 30, 1918 in Melcher, Iowa, to Roy and Fern (Gibson) Shipman. Helen married Dave Farnam, July 1947 in Bowling Green, Ohio. She spent her working years employed as a waitress. She enjoyed cooking, crossword puzzles, reading novels, fishing and deer hunting.

    Survivors include her daughter Helen Palanacki of Cadillac, granddaughters Colleen McNamara of Harrietta, Jennifer (James) McBrian of Boon, Erin Palanacki of Cadillac; six great grandchildren; one brother Jack Shipman and half-sisters of Iowa.

    Mrs Farnam was preceded in death by her parents, infant daughter Kathleen Farnam, brothers Glenn Courier, Leroy Shipman, Harley Shipman.

    Services are 1 PM Thursday, April 29, 2004 at Hitesman - Holdship Funeral Home in Cadillac with Rev. Lloyd Jewett officiating. Burial will be in Liberty Cemetery in Manton, Michigan. Visitation will be from 7-9 on Wednesday and again on Thursday at 11 AM until time of the service.
