Gates ---- Mrs Anna Gates, died at 9:20 O’clock Sunday evening
at 211 B Avenue west, at the age of 77 years. She leaves two daughters, Mrs Frank Chambers
of Beardstown, Ill., and Mrs Blanch Lynch of Oskaloosa, and a son Ross Gibson of the U.S.
Navy, who is home on leave from New Guinea, Funeral services at Power’s funeral home
Wednesday at 2 O’clock, with Rev. Edgar L Knight in charge. Burial in White cemetery.

Mrs Bernice Currier, 47, Rose Hill Route 1, died Tuesday evening at Mahaska Hospital.
Mrs Currier was the widow of Glen Currier, she was born in St Louis, Mo., Sep 26, 1923.
She was the daughter of Mr and Mrs Abe Friede. Survivors include her mother, Mrs Edith
Friede of Santa Monica, Calif., one sister, Mrs Barbara Rude of Los Angeles, Calif.,
one brother, Marvin Friede of Albuquerque, N.M.
Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at the Garland Chapel. Burial will be at the Old
Rose Hill Cemetery.

Garfield Community Church on Sunday afternoon. January the eighteenth at 2:00 O’clock.
Sam Shipman

Sam Shipman Funeral. Iowa Valve company employees attended
funeral services for Sam Shipman. Iowa Valve company employee who died suddenly at the plant
during the lunch hour Wednesday noon. At the Wilcox Garland chapel Saturday afternoon.
Rev. E.L. Knight was in charge of the services and special music was furnished by Miss
Wilma Naaktgeboren, with Miss Jennie Fry, accompanist. Pall Bearers were Ralph Hite,
Lee Murphy, George Carr, Harry Hummel, Richrd Baker and Ralph Hart Jr. Burial at Forest
cemetery.

James J Shipman

James J Shipman

James J Shipman was born in Springfield, Ohio, October 31, 1838 and died in Red Cloud,
March 13, 1926, aged 87 years, 4 months and 12 days.
As a boy Mr Shipman moved with his parents to Cleveland, Indiana, where he grew to manhood.
He engaged in farming until he went to serve his country in the Civil War. He enlisted August
13, 1862 in Company B 99th regiment of Indiana Infantry; he was discharged at Madison, Indiana
May 24, 1865, after nearly 3 years of service. He was with General Sherman on his famous march
to the sea.
After the war he engaged in the carpenter trade at Oskaloosa Iowa, later going on
a farm. Here he was married to Miss Anna Parrish, July 3, 1870. To this union were born eight
children, two girls, Clara and Ida; and six boys, Ernest, Arthur, Sherman, William, Worth and
Harry. About 1902 he moved his family to western Kansas, where he homesteaded. Three years
later he moved to Jewell county, Kansas, where he lived until coming to Red Cloud, about 1917.
There remain to mourn his death, his wife, all of his children, Mrs Ida Shigley of Nebraska
City; Ernest Arthur, William, Sherman of Red Cloud; Worth of Siebert, Colorado; Harry of St
Paul, Minnesota; twenty one grandchildren; six great grandchildren; four brothers, Joseph W
of Ringwood, Oklahoma, Charles of Marion, Ohio, George of Whatcheer Iowa, and Grant of
Oskaloosa, Iowa, and many other relatives and friends.
Mr. Shipman was a member of the G.A.R. at Burr Oak, Kansas. “Men die, but sorrow never
dies; and the wide world is knit with ties, the crowding years divide in vain, of common
brotherhood in pain.”
Funeral services were conducted from the Garfield Community church this morning at 10
o’clock, Rev. C. G. Nelson of the Red Cloud Christian church.
