James Hutchinson Morse
Born: 6 May 1746, Hopkinton, MA; died 21 Aug 1812, Cabot, Washington Co, VT.
Son of: Seth Morse b. 12 Sep 1708 and Abigail Battles, b.12 Jul 1713.
He married
(1) 26 Nov 1769, Leichester, MA, Hannah Smith.
(2) Feb 1791, Rebecca Carruth.
(No dates or locations for birth or death on either of the wives).
The Children are all listed as children of James and Hannah.
However, I do not believe this to be correct. See note at end of
list.
First wife (none listed)
- 1. Betsy Morse
- 2. George Lyman Morse
- 3. Polly Morse
- 4. Samuel Morse
- 5. Seth Morse
Second wife - Hannah Smith on 26 Nov 1769, in Leichester, MA,
- 6. James Morse, b. 7 Aug 1770, Barre, Worcester Co, MA
- 7. David Morse, b. 6 Apr 1773, Barre, Worcester Co, MA
- 8. Battle Morse, b. 17 Nov 1775, Barre, Worcester Co, MA
- 9. Hannah Morse, b. 6 Apr 1773, Barre, Worcester Co, MA
- 10. James Morse, 25 Jun 1782, Barre, Worcester Co, MA
Third wife - Rebecca Carruth, m. Feb 1791,
- 11. William Morse, 30 May 1796, Barre, Worcester Co, MA
- 12. John Morse, born 1805
Originally all of the children were shown to be of James and Hannah, but their dates of birth
indicate otherwise. We have added the wives as we feel they should be listed and have changed
our records to indicate this.
1. The first group 1 thru 5 (no dates of birth) most likely was with a first wife (not
listed).
2. He married Hannah Smith ( originally listed as 1st wife) on 26
Nov 1769.
This indicates the second group of children 6 thru 10, as son James was born in 1770.
3. He married Rebecca Carruth ( originally listed as 2nd wife) in
Feb 1791.
This indicates the third group of children, 11 and 12, as son William was born in 1796.
My question is:
1. Was their a wife before Hannah? (No doubt). If so who was she.
2. Was the last group of children (11 & 12) really the children of Rebecca and not
Hannah.
If you have any knowledge of this family, your help would be appreciated.
