20 Years Research
For almost 20 years I have searched for my family roots. During this period I have had many ups
and downs,
many blank walls and sometimes it makes you want to give up. But continue I did, I followed my
direct line of
WRIGHTs to John WRIGHT in the census of 1850 Ottawa, LaSalle Co, IL. From there, I hit the
well known
blank wall.
Three WRIGHT Lines
Since then, in tracing my father's mother's side of the family (SCIDMORE), I find that there are
two WRIGHT
lines.
- My great Grand Father, Charles SCIDMORE's mother was Gulielma McLEES, and her
mother was
Mary WRIGHT very possibly from the Dutchess Co area. Again, a blank wall.
- Charles SCIDMORE's wife was Alidia LAMPMAN, and her mother was Sarah WRIGHT.
Here I found
pay dirt. Finally I was getting somewhere with one of my WRIGHT Lines. Through the help of
others, I
found that Sarah WRIGHT's father was Richard WRIGHT, his father was Samuel WRIGHT and
his father was
Ebenezer WRIGHT. Ebenezer was a descendant of the Kelvedon WRIGHTs and I had already
researched and
followed that line. For two years now I have researched the Kelvedon WRIGHTs and feel that I
have a good
handle on that line.
Then the wall comes tumbling down.
Recently I have found that there is NO documentation on Samuel being the son of Ebenezer, even
though
many claim that connection. A day later, I find that Sarah WRIGHT, daughter of Richard
WRIGHT was listed
at home in the 1850 census of Berne, Albany Co, NY. At the same time I found Sarah WRIGHT
in the 1850
census of Bennington, Bennington Co, VT as the wife of Stephen LAMPMAN. So they are two
different
people.
Stephen LAMPMAN
The only written history of Stephen was that at a young age of about 20, he went West, and no
other record
existed. This would have been about 1830 give or take a year or so. When I received word that
Sarah
WRIGHT was the daughter of Richard, that fit as Berne is West of Hoosick, NY. Not far, but
west.
It was odd though, that we find his marriage was in Hoosick in 1831. So, if this was the case, he
brought her
home to get married. And just as odd, she was only age 17 at the time. Even though these odd
items were
brought out, I considered them as the record, without fully doubting them (although it was in the
back of my
mind).
With no record of Samuel WRIGHT being the son of Ebenezer WRIGHT, that connection is lost.
Then, with
Sarah WRIGHT, the daughter of Richard WRIGHT, being discounted, I have to start that search
all over. And
I now have to rethink the trip West for Stephen LAMPMAN. By 1850, he had moved to
Bennington, VT and
by 1860 he had moved to Western New York, and then around 1870 he moved to Ornaga,
Iroquois Co, IL. So
now my search has returned to the Wrights living in the Hoosick, NY area in the early 1800's.
So, again, my search is for three WRIGHTs.
- 1. Mary WRIGHT, born 29 Mar 1783, died 16 May 1862,
Half
Moon, Saratoga Co, NY. She married, 24 Jul 1804, Beekman, Dutchess Co, NY; Cornall
McLEES. Cornall
was born 7 Apr 1781, Dutchess Co, NY, son of JAMES McLEES and Letitia CORNELL, a
descendant of
Thomas CORNELL.
- 2. Sarah WRIGHT, b. abt 1814 in NY. She married
Stephen
LAMPMAN on 17 Nov 1831, in Hoosick, Rensselaer Co, NY. Stephen was the son of John
LAMPMAN, born
23 Apr 1777 in Gelead-Hoosick, Rensselaer Co, NY; died 10 Mar 1842, Jacksonville, Onondaga
Co, NY and
Catharine FREDENBURGH, born 25 Mar 1786, Elizabethtown, Canada; died 25 Sep 1870,
Jacksonville,
Onaondaga Co, NY.
PLEASE - I am in dire need of your help. If anyone can in any way help in this research, it would
be greatly
appreciated.
