Philemon Wright, b. 2 Sep 1760, Woburn, MA; chr: 7 Sep 1760, Woburn; d. 2 Jun 1839 in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. He was son of Thomas Wright and Elizabeth Chandler. He m. 16 May 1782, Woburn, Abigail Wyman, of Woburn, dau of Jonathan Wyman. They had 10 Children that we know of: Some of the information contained here is from Philemon Wright High School, Hull, Quebec, Canada.

1. _________ Wright. (We do not know if this child exists.) Since we have yet to find the parent of Alonzo Wright (a grandson of Philelmon), we have listed an unknown child and placed Alonzo as his child. This will all be corrected if and when we find the families of the children of Philemon. The following articlel lists Alonzo.

Appletons' Cyclopaedia of American Biography - VI, 1889 - Wright, Alonzo, Canadian member of parliament, b. in Hull, Lower Canada, 26 Feb 1825. He is a grandson of Philemon Wright, of Woburn, Mass, who removed to Canada in 1797, founded the village of Hull, and was the first representative of the county of Ottawa in the Lower Canada assembly. The grandson was educated at Potsdam academy, NY, became a farmer, and was a representative in the Canada assembly from 1862 till 1867, when he was elected to the Dominion parliament by acclamation, re-elected by acclamation in 1872, and again returned in 1874, 1878 and in 1887.

He served in Baldwin's regiment, Wood's Co, 1776, also 2 months under Capt Wyman at Rhode Island, 1777. Thompson's Diary names him until 1706, and he sells Josiah Locke 14 acres, 1801. He removed to Ottawa, Canada in 1800, and owned the land on which the city now stands.

Philemon Wright m. Abigail Wyman, 16 May 1782 (dau of Jonathan). He served in Baldwin's Regt., Wood's Co. 1776, also 2 mos. under Capt. Wyman, at Rhode Island, 1777 (Sewall's Woburn, 577). Thompson's Diary names him till 1796, and he sells Josiah Locke 14 acres, 1801 (Wyman's Charlestown, 1052). "Nabby Wright", d. Oct. 12, 1792, aged 7 years, was perhaps his child. (He removed to Ottawa, Canada in 1800, and owned the land on which the city now stands; d. 2 Jun 1839.

Wright, Philemon, founder of Hull, Que: b. sept 3, 1760, at Woburn, Mass; d. in Hull, Que, Jue 2, 1839. Son of Thomas Wright and Elizabeth Chandler. Explored the Hull district before coming in 1800, with a party of 25 men, to settle in what be came known as Wright's Village or Wrightstown, where Hull now stands. As Wright had a capital of $30,000, the party was well equipped with livestock and tools. He immediately set upo a grist mill and a sawmill and by 1804 had a smithy, tailor shop, bake-house and tannery in operation. In 1807 he took the first raft of square timber from Hull to Quebec. The Union of the Ottawa*, the first steamboat on the Ottawa River, was built for him at Grenville, Quebec, in 1819. In 1806, he and his associates were granted one quarter of Hull Township; in consideration of his efforts to cultivate hemp, Wright received an additional grant of 1200 acres. In the space of a few years, Hull became a flourishing community. Wright became known as the Father of the Ottawa. Married Abigail Wyman; had five sons and three daughters.

Wright, Philemon (1760-1839), pioneer, was born in 1760 in Woburn, MA, and emigrated to Canada in 1800. He settled on the site of what is now Hull, Quebec, and was known as "the father of the Ottawa". He died at Hull on 2 Jun 1839. He published "An account of the first settlement of the township of Hull, on the Ottawa River, L.C. (Canadian magazine, 1824)
