Peter Wright, Esq, b. 9 Jul 1740, Hempstead, Long Island, d. 7 Jun 1821, Shaftsbury, VT, buried in the Shaftsbury Cem. He m. Elizabeth Baker, on 9 Jan 1761. Tradition says that Peter Wright came of Scotch ancestry, and that the family lived at one time in Flushing, Long Island. He lived in Newport, R.I., and after 1770 moved to North Kingston. He was, from Dec 23, 1776 to May 1778, Captain of the First Company North Kingston Militia, also recruiting Officer and member of war committees. He moved to Shaftsbury, Vt, between May 1778 and March 1779. In militia service there 1780-81-82. Representative in Vermont General Assembly 1781-2-3, 1794-5, 1797-8. In 1780 he bought a farm forfeited by a loyalist, John Monroe. The house, built in 1801, was in 1913 owned by Frank Fuller. He and wife were buried on their farm, but later moved to Shaftsbury Cem. Gravestone records:

    Elizabeth, Consort of Peter Wright, Esq, died August 16, 1819, aged 76 yrs, 4 mos, 22 days.

"We learn from many family traditions that Peter Wright's parents were of Scottish origin. His parentage at present is unknown. Correspondence with genealogists of the Oyster Bay, LI. Wright lines seems to prove he was not of that family, as their records are very complete. See Bunker's Genealogy of Oyster Bay, LI, Wrights. All my research points to his being a descendant of the Flushing LI Wrights. His family Bible states "Peter Wright, Esquire, born in the Town of Hempstead and State of NY, July 9, 1740". Elizabeth Baker born in North Kingston and State of RI, 28 Mar 1743. Marr 9 Jan 1761. Their marr certificate exists and states the ceremony was performed in St George's Church at Hempstead, LI, 9 Jul 1761. Family records show he lived many yrs in Newport, RI., his son Daniel being born there 1770. Later the City of Newport being held by the British Army, we find he removed to the Town of North Kingston, RI, where he took active part in the military affairs of RI Colony. The certified copy of his Revolutionary services there show he lived there in 1776 thru 1778. He then removed to the Township of Shaftsbury, Bennington Co, VT." In 1780 Peter bought a farm that belonged to John Monroe, a Loyalist. He died June 7, 1821, and was buried on his farm. His will was probated at Bennington, VT, 5 Sep 1821. This farm was sold to a Mr Fuller and the bodies of the Wright family were removed to Shaftsbury Cemetery where their graves may be found.
