In Search Of

The Ancestors and Descendants of
William E. Wright

Submitted By: Ethelynne K. Soares-Teves

Don, I am a WRIGHT descendant also, but I'm at a brick wall with my line.   My ggg-grandfather, William E. Wright (I believe the "E" stands for Ellis, but haven't proven it, so he remains "E.") was supposedly a mariner along with 4 brothers, who traveled back and forth to HI.   Three brothers stayed. This is a story passed down from several WRIGHT lines here in Hawaii.   I hope you have time to "listen" to my story.   If not, please feel free to hit that good ole "delete" key!   I'll understand.   You may have read my "story" before, as posted to the WRIGHT list (rootsweb) awhile back and on a couple of occasions.

Okay, "Big William," as I have nicknamed William E. Wright, was naturalized in the Kingdom of HI on 20 Jun 1854.   Two days later, he married my native Hawaiian grandmother, Emily Kaaukai, in Honolulu.

According to "Big William's" naturalization record, he was a "native of Plymouth, MA," and resided, at the time, in Lahaina on the island of Maui.   He m. Emily on Oahu and at some point, they settled on the island of Moloka'i, where Big William was a boat builder.   He sold the land there and the relocated to South Kona on the island of Hawaii (Big Island).   Both of their sons, Thomas Harris Wright and William James Wright, were b. on the island of Moloka'i.   Both sons married, although "Willie James" didn't have any children of his own.

The reason I believe that Big William's middle name is "Ellis," is because Thomas named his eldest son, "William Ellis Wright," who in turn named his son, William Ellis Wright, Jr.   Thomas also had a son named Harry Ellis Wright.

I track Big William here in HI until Oct 1876.   After that, I haven't been able to find any other info on him.   I would like to find out who his parents and siblings were and if for sure, he was from MA.   My grand-aunt says that he was from England, but she has no documented proof.

By the way, I have WRIGHT cousins here who are half Japanese.   I also have a daughter-in-law who is from Fukuoka, Japan.

My WRIGHT cousins' mother was Dorothy Masako Ohata.   One of Aunty Dorothy's brother's was a recipient of the "Medal of Honor" back in 2001, I believe it was.   Unfortunately, he had passed before that so the family went to Washington, D. C., to recieve it.

I used to do a "WRIGHT" newsletter, called, "Wright 'Ohana Connection."   Never did put it online.   I haven't done it since July 2001, right after our first-ever Wright reunion here.

In case you're interested, there were many WRIGHT lines here in Hawaii, which I haven't connected (yet) to my own.   There was a William Harrison Wright, William Horace Wright, William Wilson Wright, Benjamin Haywood Wright and some others.   Lots of Wright's were here in the early to mid-1800's.   Actually, William Wilson Wright didn't come here until 1888.   He was from England, via New Zealand, and his son, George Frederick Wright, was once mayor of Honolulu.   William Wilson Wright was a carriage maker.

Well, Don and Sue, thank you for your time!   I really love your website!!   Thanks!

A hui hou (until next time)
