We have recently discovered that someone has been using both of our e-mail addresses to send out viruses.   This has been going on for many months, but has gotten worse during the past two months.   It was discovered that during the two week period I was sick and the four week period that the computer was in the shop for repairs, the e-mails continued to be sent.   My ISP has investigated it and found that they did not go "out" through them, but cannot find where they are coming from.   I have received viruses from one address to the other, both ways.   Someone has found a way to use those two addresses.

Both of the following e-mail addresses listed on this website will be discontinued.
webmaster@footprints.org and DonWright@footprints.org
We are not sure if this will be a permant change or just for a short period of time.

What is important is that by doing this our readers will know that any e-mail received from these addresses from this point on, will not come from this computer.

Some how, someone is using both of my E-Mail address’ to send out a virus. These e-mails do not show up in my outgoing mail file.   I took both my computers and my laptop off line and sent them all to a computer service specializing on viruses, checking for anything that Symantec may have missed.   No viruses have been found.

These worms spread by emails as message attachment with PIF or other extension.   Sender address is faked.   Message subject and body are randomly generated. The virus is also attached to e-mails with empty subject and body.   Name of attachment is random as is the extension.

All Out going mail from webmaster@footprints.org and DonWright@footprints.org have for a number of years been scanned in the following manner.

  • 1. Norton’s Symantec virus checker scans all of outgoing mail before it is sent.
  • 2. Castles Network (my ISP) uses the Postini protection service which scans all outgoing mail using McAfee’s Virus Checker.
  • 3. A copy of all e-mail being sent, is also filed in my “Outgoing File”. None of the e-mails (with the virus) with our return address on them are listed in my "outgoing" file, which means they are sent from someone else.

If anyone has any suggestions, please feel free to let us know,
