A Look At The Other Side Of This Screen
Footprints Of Our Past

The Footprints Web Page is like no other Web Page on the Internet. It was not designed as a business, nor a place to show my family history, but as a way to return to others the information that has been provided us over the past 20 years by people all across the nation. It is our way of saying "Thank You" for your help.

Many of you that are reading this have never heard of me before and I have never heard of you, but yet everything is done with the thought that you the reader are someone visiting my home and are sitting here beside me, and that I am talking to you and showing you what I have. My articles are all written as notes as if I am writing you a note and explaining what I have and how I am working with each name.

Most people visit web pages looking for something and if they don't find it at a glance they move on. That is expected. In fact that is one of the reasons this page is located deep in a file that very few people will find. You found it because you were interested in this Web Site, interested enough to look at everything.

The design of the Web Site is nothing fancy, just a plain design. It is our desire for this web page to be one that interacts with it's readers. In other words, we work together. We will add to these pages what ever you the reader would like. We want to allow you to have a location to place your information for others to see.

BookMarking
The Web Page

I put each page on the Web Site in a location that I think is the proper location. Many times I find that it must be relocated. In reality, it doesn't have to be moved, just renumbered. With our numbering system, it makes it easier to find when I need to make changes. So, we are now reminding everyone that wants to bookmark a page, they may do so, but should also bookmark the home page. This way, if their favorite page has been moved, they can still find it.

How We Get Our
Information

Over the years many people have provided me with a lot of information by xeroxing pages from publications across the nation. Some are vital records, some are published histories, some are found in County Histories, newspapers, and even bibles, just about anywhere someone can find records. We keep them on file and go through them many times.

The first time we go through an article, we pull that information that connects to our database. Later we go through the articles again and find more connections. Each time go through an article we find new information to add. This continues on and on, a never ending search. As we use each article it draws in more comments, more help and provides more information that is added to the databases and the web site. It is a never ending search.

My typing is no longer what it use to be, as I have to go back and take out all the spaces, delete all the f, g, d and j's that seem to find their way on to my typed pages. The space bar no longer wants to work as I get to the end of the words. Actually the back space and delete keys gets more work than any other key.

Sue has picked up on most of my major typing in the past 10 years, but now she is having problems with her eyes, so things have kind of slowed down. Many people now send their information by e-mail and that helps because I don't have to type long periods of time, and can stick to coding for the web page. We no longer produce the newsletter, so the extra formatting is no longer necessary.

I still put the long hours in it, and love every minute of it.

Web Page Design
and Coding

The design and coding of the web page does not come easy. I use nothing but basic tools, such as Word Perfect, Word Pad, and a couple of old books on Web Pages that actually give you very little on coding.

Little by little, I am learning different codes and ideas. This page is the first that is not normal for my web site. This particular page was started a number of months before placing it on the Web Site. I have added to it and deleted from it many times as time goes by. Still it is nothing fancy, just a little different.

From this testing, I did learn how to do certain things and I set up my Kelvedon Wright pages using this format before putting this page on line.

   Web Page Problems

One of my problems is that I use a screen set at 800x600 and if your screen is set differently then your pages will look different than mine, and I don't know how to correct this, if it is possible.

Another problem that is not important to others, but is to me, is that I need input as to how the screen looks to others. I want it to be neat and easy to read, and I want the users to be able to move from page to page without problems. We have removed the music and added it back on in another style. This should eliminate the slow down caused by the music. Hopefully this will help.

There is nothing worse than to have to sit and wait for many minutes for a page to load. I realize that there are times when a particular page is heavily used, it will be slow, but still, I like for it to be as quick as possible. I also know that my ISP's server has it's slow down periods. Still the pages on the most part should change and load fairly fast. If they don't I kneed to know so I can find out why.

VIRUS

In December 2001 we were hit by a virus that destroyed my computer. After reinstalling my data many times, we finally had to reformat the hard disk. Then we were finally back up and running properly and with many virus protections, loading the programs again, etc. Then, this year I lost the Hard Drive. The old 400Mz e-Machine finally gave up. It wasn't too hard for me to decide to purchase a new 2.2GHz computer with Win XP. This meant a new learning experience.
